Today's Scripture is from 2 Timothy 1:7 - "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love of a sound mind."
Today's quote is from Charles Spurgeon - "God helps those who cannot help themselves."
We landed in Lusaka this morning at around 8:30 AM and we had quite an experience at baggage claim. Several of our bags were torn and one completely exploded but nonetheless we persevered and made our way to the bus - this is where we met Layton, our Family Legacy partner and Lusaka tour guide! We took about a 30 minute drive to our hotel for the night, Latitude 15. On our way to the hotel we drove past the President's compound which was guarded by the Zambian military. When we got to the hotel, we all settled into our rooms and then enjoyed a nice lunch outside in the beautiful 70 degree weather. Some of us tried crocodile kebabs and believe it or not, it did in fact look and taste like chicken.
After lunch we hopped back on the bus and drove out to Kabanana (a comunity located outside of Lusaka) where we got to tour a Family Legacy Academy. The drive there was very eyeopening and we got to see a lot of ways in which Zambian culutre differentiates from American culture. For example, we started to get used to driving on the other side of the road and seeing street vendors walking through traffic. The road to the Family Legacy Academy was very rough to say the least, shoutout to our driver Dennis, we're not sure how he managed to get us there in one piece.
When we arrived at the school, we got to tour the classrooms and meet several of the teachers and other faculty. The Family Legacy Academy recently received a donation of about 51,000 books to start libraries for their 22 schools across the country. The new libraries will finally allow students to take home books and practice what they're leanring at school which will vastly increase their literacy skills.
We went to an ATM in the Manda Hill Mall to withdraw Kwacha, the national currency, for our trip to market that's coming up on Sunday. While we were there, some of us explored a local grocery store and bought some Zambian ice cream. The ice cream cost 10 Kwacha which is the equivalent of $0.54 USD but for the most part it was surprisingly good despite how cheap it was.
To end the night, our team went to dinner which included live music! We were all pretty tired so an early turn in was much needed. We are eager to keep learning more about Zambian culture and see what the Lord has in store for us over the next week and a half!
Thank you for all your prayers! #sicemzambia
